Xochimilco

It took me four visits to Mexico City to finally make it to Xochimilco, a UNESCO Heritage Site on the shores of a pre-Hispanic lake. Several canals and islands shape the neighborhood and you must board a trajinera (local colorful boat) to be taken around. Most trajineras are on the Embarcadero Flores Nativitas, where you negotiate the price and duration of your tour before boarding. Add music and drinks to make it more of a fun day out. Along the canals, you will be approached by other trajineras carrying mariachis, quesadillas, beer, souvenirs and much more. It is an ideal program for a small group of friends or family. If you get there by yourself, try to mingle with other tourists to make the tour together and share the costs.
