🇧🇷 Vim ao Japão em busca de sensações e experiências. Mais do que visitar um templo, um museu ou um restaurante, o que me dá tesão é viver a rotina do lugar, familiarizar-me com os pequenos atos cotidianos. Penso que, se os repetir por um certo tempo, posso ter a sensação de morar aqui, de quase ser japonês. Está funcionando.
Depois que as primeiras semanas de confusão com o fuso horário passaram, que aprendi onde ficar nas várias filas, como pagar o ônibus e a comprar a passagem do trem bala, um senso de familiaridade se estabeleceu. Me dou conta quando saio de manhã para correr ou para comprar um café de que tudo em minha volta é Japão. Então entro em êxtase. Abre-se uma dimensão nova. É como ocupar um romance, como As irmãs Makioka, de Tanizaki ou Kyoto, de Yasunari Kawabata, só que de verdade.
Cheguei em Kyoto ontem no fim de tarde. A estação estava em ebulição. Era sexta-feira. Chovia pela primeira vez em dias. Consegui encontrar a plataforma do trem local que me trouxe até o bairro de Shimogyo, onde aluguei uma casa japonesa. Deixei a mala na porta e corri ao supermercado. Comprei ovos, tofu, algas, batata doce e uma enguia grelhada. Comprei também iogurte, bananas, caqui e suco de tomate. Já sei me comportar certinho na hora de passar no caixa, pagar na tela eletrônica e colocar tudo na minha fukuro (sacolinha de compras) rapidinho. Respondo às várias perguntas que a moça do caixa me faz só com acenos de cabeça. Não faço noção do que me pergunta e com o que eu esteja concordando. Solto uma leva de arigatôs e sorrisos. Lembro sempre do livro Querida Konbini, da Sayaka Murata.
Fez frio durante a noite. O primeiro frio do outono. Não achei ruim porque finalmente as folhas das árvores ficarão vermelhas. Quando o sol despontou na janela, fui correr até o Castelo Nijo. Já consigo esperar o sinal ficar verde nas esquinas sem a tentação de cruzar as ruas vazias. Faço polichinelos ou agachamentos para não perder o ritmo. Ninguém olha para mim. Todo mundo é meio invisível por aqui. Na volta passei ao lado de um onsen (banhos termais) e, como estava suado e com frio, achei uma boa ideia esquentar os meus ossos. Foi maravilhoso ficar de molho nas banheiras de água pelando com todos os pelados. Cheguei em casa renovado, quase falando japonês.
Circulei bastante nestes 20 dias. Passei por Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Hiroshima e as ilhas de Naoshima e Teshima antes de chegar aqui. As cidades são muito parecidas. Me encantei com as ilhas, que estavam no meu radar há anos, desde que descobri a Setouchi Triennale. Imagine Inhotim na Ilha do Mel. É quase isso. São museus construídos por arquitetos premiados que não interferem com a paisagem selvagem das ilhas. Cada museu é dedicado somente a um ou dois artistas, com instalações de cair o queixo e elevar a alma.
O highlight foi o Teshima Art Museum, uma construção gigantesca chamada Matrix que parece uma nave espacial no meio da floresta. Com um óculo médio e outro enorme por onde entra luz solar, se vê a mata. Pequenos orifícios no chão soltam gotas de água que, ao encontrar outras gotas, formam “lombrigas" de água que correm aqui e ali. Tem-se a sensação de estar em um templo, uma catedral, um lugar divino. Ninguém fala. Todos contemplam o belo, alguns meditam, outros se deitam no chão. Não dá vontade de ir embora.
Outra instalação que me impactou foi Minamidera, do Art House Project. Arquitetura de Tadao Ando para uma obra do James Turrell. Entra-se em um espaço totalmente escuro tateando as paredes até encontrar um banco para sentar. Fica-se em silêncio a contemplar o vazio por uns bons minutos até que o olho vai se acostumando. Lá no fundo surge algo tenuemente iluminado. Aos poucos a sala vai ganhando forma, pois aquele nadica de nada de luz consegue dar forma à sala. Em um certo ponto, somos convidados a caminhar e a nos aproximarmos da luz. O que era escuridão torna-se manejável, até mesmo claro. Jun’inchiro Tanizaki, que escreveu Em louvor da sombra, deve ter sido a inspiração.
O Parque da Paz, em Hiroshima, também impacta demais. Foi o epicentro da explosão da bomba atômica em 1945. Tudo foi destruído. Hoje vemos as ruínas do único edifício que ficou em pé. Algumas árvores também sobreviveram. Ao longo dos anos foram plantadas muitíssimas outras e a cidade é cortada por muitos canais. Dá um certo alento no coração ver uma cidade limpa, organizada, calma, pacífica e cheia de turistas do mundo todo onde, há menos de 80 anos, só havia devastação radioativa.
O Japão está longe de ser perfeito. Mas consegue fazer muita coisa funcionar à perfeição. Tudo é limpo. Seguro. Os ônibus, trens, barcos, navios, metrôs saem no horário. As filas são respeitadas e andam. Ninguém fala alto. Não se joga lixo no chão. Há centenas de regras, claro, e cartazes em todos os lugares avisando das proibições e alertando sobre bons costumes. Tem horas que irrita, mas só assim para um país com gente demais não entrar em ebulição. Ainda se trabalha muito. A sociedade é paternalista, patriarcal e racista. Os japoneses hoje são mais “pobres" do que nos anos 1980. E muito mais velhos. Cerca de 30% a população tem mais de 65 anos. Em 2022 só nasceram 800 mil crianças, o menor número desde que começou a contagem.
O Japão é uma caixinha de bombons surpresa deliciosa e saborosa. Estou viciado e sei que vou sentir falta do meu dia a dia nipônico quando voltar para Curitiba. Não ficaria aqui por mais tempo, correndo o risco de virar japonês demais e não consguir mais me adaptar ao mundo, coisa que acontece bastante. Tem muito japonês que não sai daqui por medo dos perigos, doenças, sujeira e confusão além mar. Mas também porque o iene, a moeda deles, está bem desvalorizada, gerando uma troca de papéis difícil de engolir. As marés de turistas ameaçam a cultura local quase tanto quanto os tsunamis, terremotos e incêndios que acometem essas ilhas com frequência há muito tempo.

🇬🇧 I came to Japan in search of sensations and experiences. More than visiting a temple, a museum or a certain restaurant, what turns me on is experiencing the routine of the place, familiarizing myself with the small daily acts. I think that if I repeat them often, I can get the feeling of living here, of almost being Japanese. It's working.
After the first few days of time zone confusion, as I learned where to stand in the various queues, how to pay for the bus and how to buy a bullet train ticket, a sense of familiarity took over. I realize when I go out in the morning for a run or to buy a coffee that everything around me is Japan. So I go into ecstasy. A new dimension opens up. It's like occupying a novel, like The Makioka Sisters, by Tanizaki or The Old Capital, by Yasunari Kawabata, but for real.
I arrived in Kyoto yesterday late afternoon. The train station was bursting of people. It was Friday. It rained for the first time in days. I managed to find the local train that brought me to the Shimogyo neighborhood, where I rented a Japanese house. I left my suitcase at the door and ran to the supermarket. I bought eggs, tofu, seaweed, sweet potatoes and a grilled eel. I also bought yogurt, bananas, persimmons and tomato juice. I now know how to behave correctly when going to the checkout, paying on the electronic screen and putting everything in my fukuro (shopping bag) quickly. I answer the various questions the cashier asks me just with nods. I have no idea what she is asking and what I'm agreeing with. I just say arigato many times and smile. I think of the book Convenience Store Girl, by Sayaka Murata.
It was cold during the night. The first cold of autumn. I didn't think it was bad because finally the leaves will turn red. When the sun came thru the window, I ran to Nijo Castle. I can now wait for the lights to turn green without the temptation to cross empty streets. I do jumping jacks or squats so I don't lose the rhythm. Nobody looks at me. Everyone is kind of invisible here. On the way back I passed by an onsen (thermal baths). As I was sweaty and cold, I thought it was a good idea to warm my bones. It was wonderful to soak in the bathtubs of ultra hot water and naked men. I arrived home refreshed, almost speaking Japanese.
I traveled a lot in these 20 days. I passed through Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Hiroshima and the islands of Naoshima and Teshima before arriving in Kyoto. The cities are very similar. I fell in love with the islands, which had been on my radar for years, ever since I discovered the Setouchi Triennale. There are museums built by award-winning architects that do not interfere with the wild landscape. Each museum is dedicated to just one or two artists, with jaw-dropping and soul-elevating installations.
The highlight was the Teshima Art Museum, a gigantic construction called Matrix that looks like a spaceship in the middle of the forest. With two oculi (holes in the ceiling) through which sunlight enters, you can see the forest. Small holes on the floor release droplets of water which, upon finding other drops, form “worms" of water that run here and there. One has the feeling of being in a temple, a cathedral, a divine place. No one speaks. Everyone contemplates the beauty, some meditate, others lie down on the floor. You don't want to leave.
Another installation that impacted me was Minamidera, by the Art House Project. Architecture by Tadao Ando for a work by James Turrell. You enter a completely dark space, touching the walls until you find a bench to sit on. You remain silently contemplating the void for a good few minutes until your eyes get used to the darkness. Suddenly something faintly illuminated appears. Little by little the room takes shape, as that hint of light manages to give volume to the room. At a certain point, we are invited to walk around and get closer to the light. What was darkness becomes familiar. Jun’inchiro Tanizaki, who wrote In Praise of Shadow, was a probable inspiration.
The Peace Park, in Hiroshima, is also a place of atonement. It was the epicenter of the atomic bomb explosion in 1945. Everything was destroyed. Today we see the ruins of the only building that remained standing. Some trees also survived. Many others have been planted over the years and the city is crossed by many canals. It gives a certain kind of hope to see a clean, organized, calm and peaceful city full of tourists from all over the world where, less than 80 years ago, there was only radioactive devastation.
Japan is far from perfect. But it manages to make a lot of things work perfectly. Everything is clean. Safe. Buses, trains, boats, ships and subways run on time. The queues are respected and move. Nobody speaks loudly. There is no rubbish on the floor. There are hundreds of rules, of course, and posters everywhere warning of prohibitions and reminding about good manners. There are times when it gets irritating. There's still a lot of work to be done. Society is paternalistic, patriarchal and racist. The Japanese today are “poorer” than in the 1980s. And much older. Around 30% of the population is over 65 years old. In 2022, only 800,000 children were born, the lowest number since counting began.
Japan is a delicious and tasty surprise box. I'm hooked and I know I'll miss my Japanese everyday life when I return to Curitiba. I wouldn't stay here any longer, running the risk of becoming too Japanese and no longer being able to adapt to the world, something that happens a lot. There are many Japanese who don't leave for fear of the dangers, diseases, dirt and confusion overseas. But also because the yen, their currency, is very devalued, creating an exchange of roles that is difficult to swallow. The tides of tourists threaten the local culture almost as much as the tsunamis, earthquakes and fires that have frequently hit these islands for years.
