For me, one of the most quintessential New York writer is Paul Auster. I have been his fan for the past 25 years reading every single new novel, newspaper article and information about him. More than a New Yorker, Auster is a Brooklynite and many of his novels are set in the neighborhood. If you want to travel the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn with the most interesting characters in contemporary American fiction, read one of his novels. My top favorites are:
